I’ve been working on redesigning our church’s website for about a month now, and it went live today. You can see it here.
I think that we, as a Christian community, need to really take a step back and look at how we approach the culture around us. I’ve encountered several sites lately that make me say, “Why do we need this?” Take a look at the examples below:
- www.truthcasting.com – The Christian iTunes
- www.faithout.com – The Christian Facebook
- www.xianz.com – The Christian MySpace
- www.godtube.com – The Christian YouTube
Do we need a separate YouTube site? Or Facebook? Did Jesus tell us to live within the world or completely isolate from it?
I have given them your word, and the world has hated them because they are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. I do not ask that you take them out of the world, but that you keep them from the evil one. They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth. As you sent me into the world, so I have sent them into the world.
John 17:14-18 (ESV)
Notice that Christ is talking about us being within the world, but not of the world. We are to be sanctified not by completely removing ourselves from the world, but by the Word of God. Jesus has sent us into the world.
We should not separate ourselves from the culture into our own little subculture. We should be counter-cultural, within the culture shining the light of Jesus in the darkness.
Now, that being said, I do see a place for Christian and theological discussion sites. Sites such as Theophiles.org (formerly Christdot.org) and The Boar’s Head Tavern. But this is because discussion sites are normally topical. Web 2.0 Social Networking sites seem completely different.
Now, if one of these sites, such as Faithout, can bring something new to the table to make themselves unique and not so obviously just a Facebook clone, then it may be a different story. But these sites need to determine why they are relevant and not just focus on being a Christian “alternative” to the other sites.
Just my thoughts on the Christian Web 2.0 Sub Culture…
Emma is sure growing up fast! She started Dance lessons and Cubbies this year. Here is a picture of her before her first dance lesson.
Christopher’s first birthday will be in just a couple of weeks, and he’s now walking! Here’s a video of him.
